VERDUNO PAESE DEL BAROLO E VERDUNO PELAVERGA, ANTICO POSSEDIMENTO DI CASA SAVOIA E PAESE NATALE DEL BEATO SEBASTIANO VALFRE’

Il paese di Verduno ha origini celtiche: il nome, Verodunum, significa fertile località collinare.

Era considerato luogo di villeggiatura già in epoca romana dalle famiglie patrizie di Alba Pompeia e Pollentia.

Durante il Medioevo Verduno entra a far parte dei possedimenti del Vescovo di Alba, per poi passare sotto la gestione dell’Abbazia di Breme in Lomellina.

Nel 1629 Verduno dà i natali al Beato Sebastiano Valfrè, sacerdote della Congregazione dell’Oratorio di San Filippo Neri, confessore del Duca Vittorio Amedeo II.

 

Sebastiano Valfrè svolge un ruolo primario durante l’assedio di Torino dove muore nel 1710. E’ beatificato nel 1834. A fine ‘800 sorge, sulla casa natale, una cappella, poi trasformata in Santuario.

Nel 1631, con la Pace di Cherasco, il borgo entra a far parte del Ducato Sabaudo.

Re Carlo Alberto, nel 1837, acquista il Castello e affida al Gen. Paolo Francesco Staglieno la gestione della tenuta con il compito di trasformarla in azienda agricola modello: ben presto essa diventa centro d’eccellenza vitivinicola della Casa Reale. Il generale Staglieno produce qui, dalle uve nebbiolo, un vino eccezionalmente ricco e armonioso, destinato a diventare l’ambasciatore del Piemonte dei Savoia nelle corti europee: il Barolo.

Importante nome nella storia di Verduno fu poi il commendatore Giovanni Battista Burlotto, fornitore di casa Savoia, che portò il Barolo di Verduno sino al Polo Nord in occasione della famosa spedizione artica del Duca degli Abruzzi del 1899.

Verduno dà anche il nome ad una delle più piccole D.O.C. d’Italia: il Verduno-Pelaverga o Verduno, istituita nel 1995, il cui vino è frutto di un antico vitigno autoctono a bacca nera, il Pelaverga piccolo. La tradizione popolare racconta che si tratti di un vino dalle proprietà afrodisiache.

Il Pelaverga piccolo è una varietà molto antica, presente da tempo immemorabile nel territorio del comune di Verduno. Le prime notizie relative al Pelaverga piccolo a Verduno risalgono alla fine del 1400. Documenti parlano infatti di certe “uve negre” aggrappate ad alberi da frutta.

The village of Verduno has Celtic origins. The name Verodunum means fertile hillside village. It was already considered a holiday resort already in Roman age by the patrician families of Alba Pompeia and Pollentia.

Verduno became part of the possessions of the Bishop of Alba during the Middle Ages and then it went under the management of the Abbey of Breme of Lomellina.

In 1629 Verduno is the birthplace of Blessed Sebastiano Valfrè, priest of the Congregation of the Oratory of San Filippo Neri, confessor of Duke Vittorio Amedeo II.

Sebastiano Valfrè played a primary role during the siege of Turin where he died in 1710. He was beatified in 1834. At the end of 1800 a chapel stood on the birthplace and then it was transformed into a sanctuary.

In 1631, with the Peace of Cherasco, the village became part of the Duchy of Savoy.

King Carlo Alberto of Savoy bought the castle in 1837 and entrusted the management of the property to General Paolo Francesco Staglieno. It became the centre of wine excellence of the Royal House with the task of transforming it into a model winery. General Staglieno produced, for the first time from Nebbiolo grapes, an exceptionally rich and harmonious wine, that was destined to become the ambassador of Savoy Piedmont in the European courts: the Barolo.

An important name in the history of Verduno was then “Commendatore” Giovanni Battista Burlotto, supplier of the House of Savoy, who brought the Barolo of Verduno to the North Pole on the occasion of the famous Arctic expedition of the Duke of Abruzzi in 1899.

Verduno gives the name to one of the smallest D.O.C. of Italy: Verduno Pelaverga or Verduno. It was established in 1995, whose wine is the fruit of an ancient native black grapes variety: small Pelaverga. According to a popular tradition it is a wine with aphrodisiac properties.

The small Pelaverga is a very ancient variety and present since time immemorial in the territory of the municipality of Verduno. The first information about the small Pelaverga in Verduno dates back to the end of 1400. Some documents tell about “black grapes” clinging to fruit trees.
