LA CHIESA DI SAN MICHELE ARCANGELO
L’esistenza di un’antica chiesa dedicata a Sanctii Michaeli de Verduno è attestata in una bolla di Papa Alessandro III del 1162.
Nei secoli successivi viene citata la chiesa di San Michele “in villa” per distinguerla dalla chiesa parrocchiale di San Martino, posta accanto al cimitero.
Nel 1707 iniziano i lavori di riedificazione dell’attuale chiesa parrocchiale nel sito di San Michele.
La facciata della chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo è sprovvista del frontone mentre l’interno è maestoso e imponente, ad unica navata con cappelle laterali, e risente dell’influsso dell’arte barocca.
La tela dell’Immacolata nel primo altare di destra è attribuita al pittore Sebastiano Taricco di Cherasco (1641-1710), mentre l’immagine del Beato Sebastiano Valfrè è di Agostino Cottolengo di Bra (1794-1853).
Nella chiesa è custodita la statua lignea della Madonna che, ogni 8 settembre, viene portata, nel corso di una suggestiva processione a lume di candela, per le vie del paese sino alla “chiesetta della Madonnina” posta all’ingresso di Verduno.
THE CHURCH OF SAN MICHELE
The existence of an ancient church dedicated to Sanctii Michaeli de Verduno is attested in a bull of Pope Alexander III in 1162.
In the following centuries the church of San Michele “in villa” is mentioned to distinguish it from the parish church of San Martino, located next to the cemetery.
In 1707 the work began to rebuild the current parish church on the site of San Michele.
The façade of the church of San Michele Arcangelo is without the pediment while the interior is majestic and imposing with a single nave, with side chapels and is affected by the influence of the Baroque art.
The canvas of the Immaculate in the first altar on the right is attributed to the painter Sebastiano Taricco from Cherasco (1641-1710), while the image of Blessed Sebastiano Valfrè is painted by Agostino Cottolengo from Bra (1794-1853).
In the church the wooden statue of the Virgin Mary is kept that is carried, during a suggestive candlelight procession, through the streets of the village, to the “church of the Madonnina” placed at the entrance of Verduno every 8th September.
